5 minutes is excessive - but that is likely your device... on my device running Fedora 64 it takes about 45 seconds before I see the home screen, and my app starts up just after.
Typically I use the device manager to start the emulator before I start debugging. this way it is ready and waiting and my app starts "instantly" Also, another noobie mishap - you do not need to kill the emulator between app restarts. Let it run for your entire session. The app will be reinstalled and relaunched as needed.
