I'm more of a hardware guy myself so I'm familiar with C/C++, but have no Java or XML experience to speak of. I picked up the O'Reilly book on Android development and so far it's been great. I had some issues getting Eclipse to work, but then I can't remember a time when setting up Eclipse was NOT painful. I got the first "Hello Android" app working in minutes (once Eclipse worked), and in the next chapter I'll be playing with the map features.
I'm still working my way through it so I can't give a coherent review, but so far I'm really glad I bought it.
