I have an application (alarm clock thing) that sets an alarm and has a
broadcast receiver to get this alarm, take a wakelock and run my app.
During my testing, I see the following results:

1. Set alarm, alarm goes off while phone is actively being used, alarm
triggers fine and my app runs.
2. Set alarm, phone goes to sleep on it's own (mine is setup for 1
minute), alarm triggers fine, phone wakes up and my app runs.
3. Set alarm, I press the power button once to put the phone to sleep
(not off!), alarm triggers but app does not run and app seems to
thrash like the wakelock comes and goes.

What is the difference between pressing the power button to force
sleep mode vs. letting the phone sleep on its own cause different
behavior here?
