You're running that code in the main UI thread, which means you set the view to slash, then immediately put the main thread to sleep (which will make your app unresponsive), then you change the view again so the first screen has not shown up since the main thread (which you blocked) never got a chance to process the command to set the splash screen. You need to start with the splash screen, then schedule a Runnable to run in 2 seconds (or whatever) on the UI thread with the code to change to the other layout.
