Someone else emailed me directly with the same problem. It looks like this is simply a bug in Android. The work-around should be pretty simple:
1) Build a periodic Timer with a TimerTask that registers the listener, say every 10 minutes or whatever frequency is required. 2) Unregister the listener inside the listener. I'll implement this in the next day or two and report back how it works.
