Hi Glenn,
Last time I face this issue when I using Vmware to fetch AOSP, I try "repo" 
command but nothing happen.
And I found that KIS (kaspersky internet security) does not allow to 
connect to google server.
If you have any anti-virus on your system, you could disable and try again.
