Had I won, perhaps I would have found the ADC process just perfect and
an expected confirmation of what I already know: that I am great :-)
But now, seriously... That was one tough Challenge: 1,738 '0's vs only
50 '1's. If I were Google, on seeing a bigger than expected number of
submissions, I would a) extend the judging period, and b) increase the
number of semi/quarter-finalists to at least 200. 1788 apps cannot be
all good, but even with 2/3 pruned more than 500 good apps would
remain. 1 in 5? Still some 350. 1 in 10? 173. I am sure there are *at
least* that many great apps in the Challenge, yet the mysterious
judging process still needs to discard more than 2/3 of them to arrive
at the winning 50.
I wish we had 200-300 semi-finalists now. I would like to be one of
them even if I was to lose in the next round! As a result more teams
would stay super motivated thus contributing profoundly to the success
of the platform. As it is the process created a strong minority of
happy devs vs. an overwhelming majority of people who must feel
somewhat disheartened by the process and that is not a good result!
Having more semi-finalists would give them more time to work on their
apps. I, for one, had learned about the Challenge pretty late; I
believe my app is great but it is definitely not polished today: it
needs work. With more time I'd have added eye candy, icons, etc, etc.
I guess many of us wished we had more time even for relatively trivial
shiny things that would perhaps appeal to the judges more. Then the
judging itself... A mystery. In sports at least you SEE that the fella
next to you just ran faster, and everybody on the stadium and TV saw
that too, no doubts left. Not here. With ADC we submit apps, than
something mysterious happens, and 1738 zeroes are assigned :-( Too
black-and-white, too quickly in the process.
Bottom line? I've had fun, I've learned a lot, I am proud of my app, I
feel a part of all of us, I am going to continue investing in Android
app building, I strongly believe in the platform
-- I am not a winner, BUT the Challenge itself is definitely not a
winner either :-)
How many of you would call the Challenge a success?
