Some people in open source environments works for prestige and to help other people, not for money. Ranking define prestige. Others work for money and the majority for both.
In my particular case a have a couple of VC asking they self, "I like the idea, sounds great, but what think Google and OHA?". I have patents pending, concepts proved and products for marketing by Q4 2008 pending for VC support. My potential VCs doesn't have experience in this business area, they are respectfully seniors and invest with caution. I don’t need the ranking to show in my web page. I need the ranking to help explain where the ideas are located and evaluate Venture risk better from a well-know and trustworthy source: Google. Maybe the ranking is wrong from judges (over / under valuated), but is the best that I have right now. Next week, I will start an alternate VC strategy if quartile ranking is not available.
