Mmin,
Awesome application and brilliant features. Nevertheless, based on my
experience in mobile apps, I thought I could provide you some thoughts
to make use of all the efforts you put into it in order to transform
it into something really useful, if you were to pursue which I really
advise you to do.
In general calculator applications with basic features are
predominately available on almost any device. However, the reason for
not seeing too many innovations in this area is based on market
demands; most users needs are achieved by the basic operations
including math operators and some unit conversion already available by
any of these apps, and hence potentially the ADC judging rational. As
such, here's a list of Use Cases / Features / strategies to help you
build on your work;
- Your application can be easily repositioned for different verticals
while focusing on specific user segments with feature developed
accordingly. As it stands, it seems mainly science students may find
real value in your application. Therefore developing features more
focused on this category of the market would be one good approach. In
this aspect, one could imagine an application with built-in set of
formulas and examples for different topic. In this approach, student
of a specific course can easily select a topic to list all associated
formulas and definition of each parameter with capability of real time
simulation and displays of results and graphs. Educational tools that
can enhance the learning process by allowing students to focuses on
understanding and applying the maths and physics of theory with real
time visualization can well be adopted by the market. I had research
grant during my grad school to develop similar PC software for robotic
courses.
- Additionally, one can easily visualize another extension to above
application by adding a connected aspect through Bluetooth, WIFI or
3G... In this scenario, students are able to share formulas or
solutions as P2P or centrally driven from a server that can be
controlled by another application (lets say a teacher) and shared with
others (students). On a personal note, I can see a mobile Maple
business case possibility (if you're familiar with this products).
- Another vertical to focus on can be the financial market including
other derivatives like brokers. I developed an application back in
late 90s for the Palm that provided easy tool to perform monthly
payment, amortization, brokering and I got lots of interests in that
area. In this aspect, you can easily revise your application to
provide all sets of formulas and tools to quickly perform specific
business logic needed for this market.
- One good vertical may be the currency and time conversion as you
already started. Nevertheless this is not enough these days as it's a
mature market. Therefore one should bring real useful enhancement to
raise demands for such application. I can see many feature in this
aspect, nevertheless the idea is to verticalize the application and
make it more focused on specific market while bringing a whole set of
value added...
- Other area for the app may be in the space of measure
instrumentation. One could imagine the application enhanced to include
image capture capability in order to provide different type of surface
measurements and then required quantity of materials (lets say paints,
cements, soil... just imagine the application) that can serve
different type of users.

Just some thoughts on a rare vacation day hopping to help...

Regards,
Elie
