I've been using a sync adapter for application data and it worked out really well. The downside is that there is no API to set the sync interval unless you're targeting froyo. (at least to my knowledge) Kind of defeats the purpose. I've had to roll with alarm manager for pre-froyo clients. My main reason for going the sync adapter route was to play nice with the users ability to manage background sync globally.
