At this point, I would start from scratch if I were you, maybe with the
HelloMapView example. Create a brand new blank Activity and a new blank
MapActivity, set them up with the bare minimum required to run, and launch
the map from the main one. See if that works. If it does, start scouring
your current code for differences. If not, I would uninstall and reinstall
Eclipse and the SDK and start way over.

Doubtful. I do the same and am working with 2.2 and it works as expected.

If you get lucky a Google Engineer might chime in, but I doubt it. I've
never seen any Googlers help out with Map related questions.
