Yes, that's right, and I don't understand why you consider this to be a nightmare. Other issues may qualify as such, but not this one IMO.
The market doesn't allow you to turn a free into a paid app, and I think that's because it would turn into a grand mess for people who upgrade but originally downloaded the app when it was free. And anyway, it's very common to have two flavours of an app, on Android and other platforms. And they exist as separate apps. Try and adapt a little bit instead of being negative.
