If you're interested, the "Programming for Battery Life" talk at Google I/O earlier this year talked about the sampling rate of the accelerometer (with an eye to battery life, but there were minimum/maximum rate figures also). The talk is on YouTube. It was somewhere in the middle of the talk - I don't remember exactly when though, sorry.
