I'd publish some code, but the example I have at the ready was for a
consulting customer. Trust me, it works -- I'm doing the exact thing you
want to (dump the regular title bar, use a graphical "title" in the
activity body).

In my case, I'm using a RelativeLayout rather than a LinearLayout as the
root, but the concept still holds.
