I have been exclusively developing on the Hero since it came out, on the original stock ROM, and the recent offical ROM update.
DDMS and screen captures worked from the start and continue to work now. The only caveat is that mine is the stock HTC Hero that has been available since August in Europe and Asia, and not the Sprint branded Hero. I doubt there would be a difference, but you never know..
