This isn't currently possible, although I wish it was. HTC's custom SenseUI widgets can do this, but as far as I know you can't plug into their widget system.
It's even worse though, since SenseUI can't even persist multiple widget states. On reboot/scene changes it creates a new widget with a new id, your old id is lost.
