The answer I provided does indeed work with
addPreferencesFromResource(R.xml.preferences).

You will however need to specify your custom ListPreference in the
preferences.xml, for example:

  <com.acme.AcmeListPreference ... />

If you want to use a ready-made Preference class then please file a
RFE on the Issues list.
