I found it I still don't know how to do it programmatically but at least now I know that it is possible to unpair by going to Settings>Wireless & Networks > Bluetooth Settings and long press on the appropriate device in the list of paired devices. And by unpairing the device that I could not connect to before, I now can. I still don't understand what caused the problem I had (inability to connect to one of two identical devices) but it was fixed by unpairing.
