Resolved the issue. The problem was one of the jar files that I was packaging had duplicate entry for the same file. If you build your project from eclipse it never complains about it but instead creates a corrupte apk file.
I created the ant build script first by running the following command from inside my project root directory. #activityCreator my.package.MyActivity I had to modify the property "external-libs" in the generated ant build file. If you then just do the build by running "ant" command it complained that one of the jar files had duplicate entry. Removing the duplicate entry fixed the problem.
