That's a bug in the Sample. On the emulator, you can use F5 to bring up Search (in the sample's "automatic" mode). For comparison, if you select "Disabled", F5 no longer works - simulating an activity where you do not want to support any search capabilities.
For comparison, you can see this in the browser, too - you can can use menu-search or you can use F5, and both will bring up a search box. If you'd like to file a bug, you can help make sure that the sample gets fixed.
