If you are trying to type these characters on your PC keyboard...
well any keyboard being used on the phone is not going to be a PC
keyboard, and in particular won't have the < and > keys where they
are. You should use the keyboard in the skin to work with the
emulator like you would on a real device; being able to type on the
computer keyboard is just a convenience, and at this point it is not
surprising if some things don't work due to differences in the
keyboards.
Fwiw, I believe in the current emulator both the PC keyboard and the
on-screen skin keyboard deliver events to the same Linux device, which
has a keymap configured like the layout of a keyboard on a real
device, so it is very difficult to emulate the PC keyboard completely.
