If you go to Contact -> Edit -> pick one # field -> press bottom left
"* # (" key, you will see "N" can be selected and input as one char of
contact number field.Dialing the #, you will see this N is interpreted as 6, similar to other alphabetical dialing. So why we need this N here as a special char input? If you check PhoneNumberUtils (http://developer.android.com/reference/ android/telephony/PhoneNumberUtils.html), you will see google only mention it is GSM wild. But I cannot find any more info about it.
