Use a server of some form.

Then don't "buy or rent a dedicated server".

Rent a VPS (e.g., Slicehost). Write your server piece on Google App
Engine.  Use XMPP and public XMPP servers (GTalk, etc.). See if anyone
is using JXTA on Android and has a NAT-traversing proxy you can use.

I am sure there are many other solutions.
