There is no support in the Android SDK for this. Of course, there is
no support for reading SMS messages, either, which is why your
application will fail for some users and may fail on some future
versions of Android:

Android is an operating system.

The Android SDK is an SDK for the operating system.

Email is an application. Gmail is an application. The Messenger app
for SMS is an application. There are ~70,000 other applications on the
Android Market.

The Android SDK provides very little access to data from applications,
as that is the responsibility of the applications themselves.

Google has not elected to offer publicly documented and supported
application APIs for Email, Gmail, or Messenger. This is not
surprising, as only a tiny percentage of the applications developed by
humanity offer APIs. It is disappointing, but not surprising.

In addition, there are many other email and SMS clients, including
custom ones written by device manufacturers and ones downloaded off of
the Android Market. They may or may not have publicly documented and
supported APIs.
