This is a statement that makes no sense. Android is not a phone, it is
a an OS that runs on devices that have ram and flash memory. If it is
to compete in this market then it should allow for efficient loading
and unloading from the flash memory. I don't see the big difficulty in
on-demand loading of applications from the SD card rather than
installing them into the device memory. Yes, the user will have to
wait a little longer for an app to load, but assuming that the app
developers are smart they will not load the entire app with its
resources into memory at once (they will run out of memory).

Basically, the way this works right now makes it a headache to deploy
applications on this platform. I have to first think about whether the
user is using a phone like the G1 or a phone that supports larger
applications?! Then I have to deploy the executable separate from the
data !! I also will have to maintain servers to allow for download of
resource files and also protect them for security ! What is the use
of the android market then for a developer, I might as well deploy on
my site as 30% of my sales for listing an app is crazy! The Apple
appstore is a one place download for applications not a catalog.

I am sorry but this is a big shortcoming if it is indeed a permanent
design decision. How can this be a smart decision? If you look at
Apple appstore sales you will see that games make up the largest
percentage of sales. Those are always larger than 5mb. It is a 3G
phone and people are buying it for apps like games and not to use it
as a phone only! Dont believe me? go check out the tmobile support
forum for complaints about running out of memory.

I saw the older posts but it was not clear to me whether that was a
permanent deal or just a temporary issue. Do we have a consensus now?
