This is the way I do it.  I also want to know if the app is running in
the emulator so I first check if there is a default adapter.

BluetoothAdapter sBluetoothAdapter =
BluetoothAdapter.getDefaultAdapter();
if (sBluetoothAdapter == null) {
        // Bluetooth is not availabl
        EMULATOR = true;
} else
        EMULATOR = false;
...

if (!EMULATOR) {
        if (!sBluetoothAdapter.isEnabled()) {
        // Bluetooth is not enabled
}
