I have a verizon motorola droid. I have no issues loading my apps onto it for testing/debugging. The only issue I run into is not being able to find a 1.5 or 1.6 ROM to test my apps on older devices. The phone will not need to be rooted but if you want to switch between 2.0, 2.01, 2.1, or 2.2 you will need to root it.
