The problem with constantly running services are twofold. One, they suck the battery. A service that turns on the radio so often will suck it even more. Two, users have these confounded apps that kill your service. You can't count on it to be running. If you try and tell your users not to kill your service, you can bet a large number will do just the opposite and then complain bitterly that your app doesn't work. A fine kettle of fish!
C2DM is going to answer both these concerns, the bigger question is when will Google release it to the general developer community? I'm guessing they'll wait until Froyo is released to a large audience of devices. So far, only custom ROM's and Nexus One users can play with 2.2, supposedly, The Droid and Droid X will have Froyo before the end of July. You'll have to take that with a grain of salt as so far all the guessers has been wrong but Froyo will be out soon and so will C2DM. -John Coryat -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Developers" group.
