Best book I've found to date is "Pro Android 2" by Sayed Hashimi, Satya Komatineni, and Dave MacLean. Just through the first couple of chapters, but it gives much more in-depth background on the platform than other books and references I've checked.
Of course, you need to know Java pretty well, too, to be very good at Android development. And a smattering of XML is good.
