Thanks for your comments. Since apps are required to be written in Java, it seems that any open- source email clients would need to be in Java coding also for the G1 phone. Also, I wonder if the SDK has any API calls for accessing calendar appointments (I know it does for contacts). I'll need to dig a bit and find out.
