Read-only or not, if you want to allow text selection, I don't see why you would want to get rid of the cursor completely. How is the user supposed to know where they're starting their selection? I don't know if this is possible, but you may try extending EditText and seeing if you can control it's properties that way. Or worst-case look at the source for how it's done and copy-paste your own version of EditText to do this. But this sounds like one of those things that's really not worth the effort it may take to get it to work ...
