You do not have permission to browse a listing (read) of the /data directory, but you do have permission to access it contents (execute for a directory). And you may have the r permission on the directories and files your app creates.
So if you use something that lets you type in the full path, such as the adb shell, you may be able to get down to a directory that you can see.
