You might want to specialize the android.os.Handler class and create a customized message. In your handler code, implement the service connection code. The periodic stuff might be another message which its implementation would post a delayed message and another message related to the service connection. You will se how easy you can clear posted messages, resume/pause and destroy it by your own code tailored with the Handler provided facilities
