Hi all,
I spent lots of hours evaluating why my development environment is not
working with my brand new T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant, while my previous dev
phone MyTouch works without a problem... I've been developing with the
following environment:
* Mac OS Snow Leopard -> VmFusion -> Ubuntu 10.04
Whenever I plug the device "MyTouch", my MAC asks if I want to attach the
device on either itself or the VmFusion virtual image running Ubuntu 10.04.
As soon as I choose the Ubuntu 10.04, I can use "adb devices" and see it on
the List. As also expected, I can use Eclipse to see the device, debug, and
install the dev application.
I have just received my new Samsung Vibrant but I cant connect it to
VmFusion... I have tried to debug the cause of the problem, but here's what
I have so far:
1. Isolating the problem to Mac,
- I tried to connect first to Mac, which I could not even navigate through
the File System out of the box. So, I enabled "Debug" and whenever connected
to the USB-MAC, I clicked in the "Mount" option in the device. I can only
use the Samsung Vibrant if I do that... Here's the command to verify that
the device was connected correctly...
marcello:tools marcello$ system_profiler SPUSBDataType
SAMSUNG_Android:
Capacity: 7.52 GB (7,518,999,552 bytes)
Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: Yes
BSD Name: disk2
Product ID: 0x681c
Vendor ID: 0x04e8 (Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.)
Version: 4.00
Serial Number: T959d52ab5a8
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: SAMSUNG
Location ID: 0x26200000
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 96
Partition Map Type: Unknown
S.M.A.R.T. status: Not Supported
After that, I was able to navigate through the "adb devices" on Mac:
marcello:tools marcello$ ./adb devices
List of devices attached
T959d52ab5a8 device
I tried to connect Eclipse, and deploy my application and everything worked
fine...
2. Verifying VmFusion
- Opening the VM configurations for my image, I can see the list of USB
devices connected: from my MAC, the MyTouch device already connected, among
others. I can use adb and Eclipse to develop my application.
- Leaving this screen dialogue open with the list of USBs, I noticed that
the device "SAMSUNG_Android" shows up right after I connect the USB cable
and choose the VMFusion image. 2 seconds after that, the device literally
disappears from the list and I can't use it on my Linux box.
Has anyone have the same problem developing on VMFusion?
I've read a lot of places where the Samsung devices handles USB connectivity
a bit differently from the rest of the other devices... So, my question is
if there is anyone with the same situation in where I am right now... I
don't want to switch my development environment to Mac as my development
environment has been for a long time, including other projects that my
Android app depend on...
Thanks
Marcello
