This type of architecture is not recommended because of many problems that arise during development and deployment. Officially, you cannot connect to a database directly. You could try using this android jdbc driver: http://code.google.com/p/sqldroid/
Other than that you should be able to communicate to any service via basic tcp/socket . Theoretically, you can just build your own drivers.
