With CyanogenMod 6.0 installed, I am running Android 2.2 on a G1. I followed their build instructions on their wiki, and I can build system images from source. I can put my own tags in my version the android's git, so I see this as a way to keep my G1 running for quite a long time. CyanogenMod 6.1 builds run a bit flakey, but I can still build the 6.0 branch when I need stability.
