If you have to use SOAP then ksoap2 is probably the best way. Writing your own will be a longer term project :).
If you have control of the web service then you can do whatever you want, but if it's someone else's web service you are stuck doing it their way :).
You'll need to tell us a lot more (what web service... who owns it... what your app uses it for) to get much more help.
