That doesn't make sense unless you're doing multi-select, which is what I
was referring to.

If you want to just effect one item in the list view, there's no reason to
have the user do two steps of selecting then pressing a button when clicking
the item itself (or using a context menu for multiple actions) will suffice
and is what most (if not all) Android users will be used to.
