I face the same issue with Arabic. Even with Froyo (2.2) that embed Arabic font, characters are not connected. I don't know Arabic but a colleague say that at least this is possible to read what is written. With Khmer language this is impossible to display correct characters (http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2233)
If any Google member have good news about font and characters rendering on Android I am interested in.
