All true - but the biggest factor is volume. You can optimize all those
other factors but if your app is only in the hands of a few hundred or even
few thousand people, it's not going to add up to much.

I'm sure you're right, but I'd love to see stats relating to this. Also
"most" of the revenue made by ads is probably a result of "very few" apps.

Exactly. But the number of developers that manage to get this large piece
are very few - and I'm guessing the OP is not going to be one of them (no
offense) - at least not anytime soon.

I'm just guessing, but Andry Birds probably has several million people
playing their game on a daily basis. That is the very rare exception. The
average developer is pretty much guaranteed to make more money on selling a
paid app outright than relying on ads.
