Apparently not - which, from a user perspective, is a good thing. Do you
*really* want to allow any developer to store any arbitrary data on a user's
device without a way to remove it?

No, that seems like the most extreme solution.
You can simply use a special file and / or folder on the SD card - this will
persist across installs and most users won't have a clue.
Or, limit your app functionality in a different way than a trial, like a
"lite" and "pro" version most of us have.

Don't get upset because this particular behavior favors the user - that's
they way it should be.
