A couple of general Java points unrelated to your problem:

1) Don't put your code in any android.* package. Use your own package,
using the standard reverse-domain-name convention, e.g.
com.example.myfrotz.

A side benefit is that it will make the stack traces much easier for
you to scan for your code vs the system's code.

2) The very strong convention in Java is to name classes with an
initial capital letter, and to name methods and fields with initial
lowercase. It's so strong that it makes it confusing to read your code
if you don't follow it. Even if you never have others read your code
-- if you follow it, it will make it easier for you to read other
people's code, too.
