I haven't tried the Samsung, but I agree about viewsonic's awful UI. I did actually flash a custom ROM within minutes of unboxing. The vega-n firmware is excellent, and with the market fix, it is a very useful device.
If you're not into flashing custom roms, don't buy a g tablet.
