Clogging up the marketplace with "SuperApp - for CelluloCarrier AmazingPhone 23X on Gingerbread *ONLY*" version differentiation really sucks. As a user, I ask you not to do that.
Look at what games are doing now to get around the APK size problem: a simple download-to-SD process that the user kicks off after they've installed the common basic APK. It's not that onerous, and it allows for your app to be as large as it needs to be. You just need the hosting space to offer the files off-market.
