Right. So preferably, you use a separate widget_info.xml file for each size option, and thus, separate widgets for the user to pick from.

If you have sample code to suggest otherwise, I'd love to see it, as
the current solutions I've seen for multiple app widget sizes are
ugly.

It definitely is ugly, and if you also consider different screen resolutions, orientations, and launchers apps, it's beyond words.
