Oh and to answer the last question: No, it is not better than Ubuntu. The package managers on OS X suck pretty bad. There is nothing like 'aptitude' on there and the replacements for it (MacPorts and Homebrew) are IMO pretty mediocre.
Though thanks to Macports' and Homebrew's high CPU usage and the excellent heat transfer properties of the metal material used to build macbook pro's, they make great hand-warmers.
