No actually you were right the first time - I was NOT reading the documentation carefully :-)
Changing the second to last line as follows makes (using newValue) fixes it. configIdPreference.setSummary((String)newValue); The SDK had all the right hooks. Very nice job Google team. BTW - the forum post editor seems to wrap around 55 characters and do other weird formatting.
