Hi all,

I got an android phone day before yesterday, and I am utterly
disappointed to find that there is no WiFi proxy support on unrooted
android phones. I was desperately looking for solutions for the last
two days. I am thinking of this solution, but since I don't have much
knowledge of Networking, I am not sure how to implement it:

1) It is an open issue in android:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1273
. Here, comment by 910 (allanco)-
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1273#c910
says he can access internet by entering proxy in default gateway.

2) Since allanco had the proxy server address and gateway address as
the same IP, he was able to enter proxy server information in gateway
address.

3) At my university, there is no other way to connect to internet
(other than a proxy server), so what I am doing is, I have created a
proxy server on my laptop. That proxy server is actually a transparent
proxy of the institute proxy server.

4) I am now thinking of entering this proxy server (i.e. my laptop's
IP) into Default Gateway in my android phone. I am hoping that this
will work, since the default gateway, and proxy address are same.

But, while creating the proxy server, I am not sure which port to
enter, because in Default Gateway, you don't enter any port number.
Please look into this issue, and confirm if this can be a possible
solution to WiFi proxy issue on android. Since allanco was able to
connect to internet with this kind of configuration, I think there is
hope.

Any ideas, Networking geniuses?

Warm Regards,
Ujjwal
