To give you a completely useless answer, this is something that is needed for mobile apps that need this functionality. If you want to build this API for fun or profit, go for it. If you're waiting for some validation from the community before proceeding, you're probably going to be waiting for a while. No one is going to say "yes, I need this" then wait for you to build it.
