in my case in the list adapter after the layout-inflating i have to call:

        LayerDrawable ld = (LayerDrawable)view.getBackground();
        BitmapDrawable bd = (BitmapDrawable)ld.getDrawable(0);
        bd.setTileModeXY(TileMode.REPEAT, TileMode.REPEAT);
